Ibrahimovic’s retirement marks an end to one of the most glittering careers of the modern football era.
He will now leave Milan with immediate effect after the second spell having won the Scudetto in 2021/22 season.
He scored numerous goals during his career, with 511 goals to be exact for Paris Saint-Germain, Man United and two Milan giants AC and Inter.
‘Age like fine wine’, as people have always talk about him, Ibrahimovic fulfilled the promise that he and Milan would win the Serie A again upon his return in 2020 as free agent.
“I say goodbye to football but not to you,” the Swede told the San Siro crowd after Sunday’s last game of the season.
He played only four times and started one match fo Rossoneri this season, with most of the time struggling with series of injuries.
“There are too many emotions for me right now. Forza Milan and goodbye,” an emotional Ibrahimovic said, holding back tears.
“The first time I came here you gave me happiness, the second time you gave me love.
“You welcomed me with open arms, you made me feel at home, I will be a Milanista for the rest of my life.”
Ibrahimovic’s decorated career
Ibra is a winner who won 34 trophies including 14 league titles and was in the nominated list for Ballon d’Or 11 times during his peak.
He won Europa League in 2017 with man United but could never touch the Champions League trophy in his career which started in the last century.
Succeeded in club’s career but Ibra’s spell with national team have never been that sweet as he retired as Sweden’s all-time top scorer with 62 goals in 122 matches.
Ibra quit international football after Euro 2016 but returned in 2021 then failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
The striker also retires as Sweden’s all-time top scorer with 62 international goals in 122 matches.
“I used to be scared when journalists asked by about my future, but now I can accept it, I’m ready,” he told reporters after his announcement.
“I’ve been doing this all my life. Football made me a man. It allowed me to know people I otherwise would never have known. I’ve travelled the world thanks to football. It’s all thanks to football.”
