Cagliari 1-3 AC Milan: Back-to-back win for Rossoneri

AC Milan came from behind to make back-to-back wins in Serie A as Rossoneri beat Cagliari at the Uinpol Domos.

Left behind the derby defeat and frustrated draw against Newcastle, Milan returned to the winning way with a tight victory against Hellas Verona and Cagliari.

As expected, rotation happened. Stefano Pioli changed the starting line-up from the team that beat Hellas Verona as Theo Hernandez, Yacine Adli, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Samuel Chukwueze, and Noah Okafor came to the side.

However, the away team did not start well. Zito Luvumbo’s near post-rocket beat Marco Sportiello. But it was a wake-up call for the visitors, and two quickfire goals before the break turned the game on its head.

Finally, Ruben Loftus Cheek’s long-range striker in the second half wrapped it up for the away team. The Rossoneri saw it out from there to make it five wins from six in the league, taking the second spot back from Juventus.

AC Milan player ratings Cagliari:

Marco Sportiello, 6.5 – Another fine show by Sportiello. Luvumbo’s finish was too good to save, but he did produce a crucial late save to protect our lead and help us avoid an anxious end to the game.

Alessandro Florenzi, 6 – Improved and solid, defended diligently, and pushed forward when possible to provide an outlet.

Malick Thiaw, 6 – His physicality and focus paired up well with Tomori.

Fikayo Tomori, 6.5 – Proved that his return could massively change things as he was solid defensively for the most part, and he even came up with a pivotal second goal to give us the lead just before half-time.

Theo Hernandez, 6 – Strong in the opening stages with his defensive work and runs forward to add an attacking dynamic as he went close with an effort that forced a fine save from the Cagliari goalkeeper. Influence and energy faded as it went on.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, 7 – Continues to add an essential element of physicality and athleticism in the Milan midfield and produced a brilliant strike from distance to seal the win and register his first goal for the club.

Yacine Adli, 6.5 – A positive performance overall as Pioli handed him a rare starting berth. 

Tijjani Reijnders, 7 – Excellent shift from the Dutchman, as he covers plenty of ground, influences things in both phases, and made decisive contributions to our comeback. 

Samuel Chukwueze, 6 – Always willing to try and unlock a defense with his technical ability, speed, and directness, and he did look threatening in the first half in particular. However, he’s still missing that decisive end product, so he’ll hopefully start making more impactful contributions soon.

Noah Okafor, 6.5 – It was a difficult evening overall as he struggled to get involved in our build-up play, but credit him for the crucial first goal. 

Christian Pulisic, 6.5 – Influential in our goals, and although there were spells where we went quiet, his energy and industry in the attacking third continued to help stretch defenses and create openings where we could be a threat.

Substitutes:

Yunus Musah, 6 – Added steeliness and energy to our midfield in the latter stages to help us see out the win.

Tommaso Pobega, 6 – Tidy shift as he did what was needed in midfield to protect our lead and secure all three points.

Luka Romero, 5.5 – Good to see him get minutes as although it wasn’t the most significant impact, he’ll hopefully be able to build off this outing,

Rafael Leao, 6 – Fortunately, he didn’t have to come on and change the game as he so often has had to do when rested. He added a fresh threat in the latter stages but was able to manage his output and do what was needed to see out the win.
