Game Highlights
Christian’ Captain America’ Pulisic was involved in both goals in Rossoneri’s first Serie A win, with the former Chelsea winger was put alongside his familiar company Giroud in the 4-3-3 formation.
It took Milan only 11 minutes to open the scoring through French talisman Giroud who fired home from another summer recruit Reijnders’ assist.
Shortly later, Pulisic left his mark with a screamer from outside the box after a decent link-up with Giroud.
The two-goal lead was enough as the visitors sat comfortably for the rest of the game while keeping a crucial clean sheet.
So what have we learned from Milan’s new season opening win?
New signings proved their worth, for now
While Pulisic made an impressive debut, Reijnders took the spotlight as the former AZ Alkmaar star completed the game with 100% passing accuracy.
He played the whole 90 minutes and provided the assist for the opening goal while constantly involved in the team’s play. Reijnders is the first Milan midfielder who has played an entire Serie A match without misplacing a pass since Opta began recording this data (2004-05).
The Netherlands play-maker is a good fit after Sandro Tonali was off to Newcastle for a heavy sum of money during the Summer transfer window.
Giroud is still at his peak at 37
Age can not bother Giroud, and 37 is just another number for the marksman.
Against Bologna, Giroud showed that he is nowhere near done as he scored the opener and then provided the assist for the second goal.
He also looked in good physical condition; his teammates could play off him well. The former Arsenal and Chelsea man provides a work rate off the ball, leading the pressing line.
Last season was a mixed bag of performances for Giroud, but he will be a crucial figure as he has always been for Rossoneri.
No more Leao’s wonder moments?
Rafael Leao seemed to lose his light after a world-class performance pulled not long ago.
It may be too soon, but there have been scares that the Portuguese will not be as good as he used to be. However, the fans believe that their striker will bounce back.
He didn’t impress in the season opener as he failed with many of his dribble attempts, and when he did beat his man, the end product was not there. This time out, the Portuguese winger wasn’t the only threat on the Milan pitch, with Pulisic up there and Reijinders behind to make the difference.
