AC Milan 0-0 Empoli – Highlights
Less than a week ago, AC Milan produced a dominant performance that destroyed Serie A leaders Napoli in Naples. But almost the same squad could not earn more than one point at home as they were held by Empoli.
The hosts had their first big chance after 12 minutes when Ante Rebic fired from Alexis Saelemaekers’s spectacular pass, but it was too easy for Samuele Perisan.
Before half time, Perisan was test again when Sandro Tonali attempted to burst forward. The visitor’s goalkeeper saved again to keep it at bay.
Paolo Zanetti’s side did well to contain the league reigning champions as they restricted Pioli’s side from pulling more threats to the post.
A penalty was awarded in the 58th minute for the host for handball by Tyronne Ebuehi, but VAR denied the spot-kick after checking.
The referee reversed the decision as the ball didn’t strike the Empoli’s man as the deadlock carried on.
Second half saw Milan’s huge improvements following the introduction of Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud, who were supposed to rest for the coming anticipated clashes with Napoli at the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Soon after being subbed in, Leao crossed the ball for Alessandro Florenzi who volleyed it off the post, which was the closest chance to open the score for the host.
Giroud even managed to put the ball in the back of the net, but again, VAR upset home crowds when the 90th-minute goal was ruled for our the French striker’s handball.
Frustrated and inconsistent Milan
Their ruthless dismantling of Napoli last time only proved more on how inconsistent Milan have been since the start of this season.
They had gone through five games with only one win and the draw at home was another disappointing performance against a team who have been struggling to find a way through the standings’ top 10.
In fact, Empoli managed just one shot on target which came at the very end, but their tactics was executed perfectly with disciplinary and they leaft San Siro with a point and Milan frustrated.
According to Opta, AC Milan have only faced two total shots against Empoli; since 2004/05, only once they did better in a Serie A match: 0 against Chievo in April 2005
