AC Milan’s squad cost after heavy Summer reinforcements

AC Milan went through the summer bringing heavy reinforcements with 10 signings during the most significant transfer window.

But even with nearly a new starting XI arrived, the total squad cost of Rossoneri increased by a relatively small amount compared to the previous campaign of 2022/23.

AC Milan’s total squad cost

According to a report from Calcio e Finanza, Milan’s 2023/24 squad increased by €6m compared to last season.

The data collected was updated in June, only months before the transfer window, which is the closest to the reality.

Gross salaries (paid by Milan) and the amortization fee for each player is calculated to estimate the impact of the players’ accounts.

Notably, players were not signed on loan, with many arriving as free-agent like the case of the latest arrival of Luka Jovic from Fiorentina.

The figures show that the club’s squad will cost just over €150m this year, which can be adjusted in the January transfer window, but the Winter market has never been significantly busy.

The total figure is slightly up compared to last season, mainly due to the 10 summer signings.

The off-load was necessary to trim Milan’s squad

The cost is up by only €6m because the club managed to off-load Sergino Dest, Ante Rebic, and Sandro Tonali, among others, who were high earners.

Marco Brescianini, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Ciprian Tatarusanu also left, as did Divock Origi, Charles DeKetelaere, and Junior Messias.

On the signing front, however, several players arrived on permanent deals. Christian Pulisic has the highest cost (again, this is gross salary plus fee amortization for this season), with Samuel Chukwueze and Ruben Loftus-Cheek completing the podium.

The crucial rebuild has been successful so far, with Pulisic and Loftus-Cheek delivered as Stefano Pioli’s side maintains a perfect run since the start of Serie A 2023/24.

Milan is ranked as 10th-youngest Serie A team

In addition to that, the current Milan’s squad is ranked the 10th-youngest in the Italian top-flight by average age.

According to stats provided by Transfermarkt, the age of the Milan team – taken as an average of the 28 players that officially form the squad – is 25.7 years.

While this is above what it was during the 2020-21 season, it is a little, and it put Milan in Serie A’s top ten of the youngest teams.

How does it compare to rivals? Inter is the league’s oldest team at 28.2 years, with Lazio second-oldest at 27. Roma (26.7) and Juventus (26.6) also crack the top five. Atalanta are surprisingly at 26.2 and Napoli at 26.

That means that Milan are the only one of the ‘top seven’ clubs in Italy with an average age below 26.
