Samuel Castillejo Ends Milan Stint, Signs With Valencia

Samuel Castillejo’s tenure with AC Milan came to an end last July 7, as he was picked up by Valencia on a free transfer.

The winger returned home to play in La Liga for the first time since leaving four years ago and was quickly reunited with Gennaro Gattuso, making the 27-year-old his first signing since appointed to succeed Pepe Bordalas at the Mestalla.

Subsequently, Los Che tied him on a three-year deal to last until 2025.

Castillejo was the last signing of Gattuso at the San Siro in 2018, in which the Rossoneri paid €25 million to Villarreal where he played three seasons there. The uncapped Spaniard as part of the player swap that saw Carlos Bacca going to El Madrigal.

Their lone season together was the Andalusian’s best in his four-year stay there, playing 40 matches and scoring 4 goals in all competitions.

However, the following seasons saw his participation limited, with Marco Giampaolo and Stefano Pioli preferring the likes of Alexis Saelemaekers and Ante Rebic on the wings instead. He picked up the Scudetto in 2022 despite being excluded from their Champions League squad and only played just five times all season (all in the Serie A), with the prior season (2020-21) was his most active when he appeared 43 times, including all 13 matches in their Europa League campaign where he scored thrice.

Overall, Castillejo scored 10 times in 113 appearances for AC Milan.

“The Club would like to thank Samu for the professionalism and commitment shown during his time here and we wish him all the best in his personal and professional life,” said AC Milan in a statement.
